Our family proudly supports
the following organizations:
The Canadian Celiac Association is an amazing national organization designed to
assist those with Celiac disease to find information and support. Supporting this organization in turn, allows them to spread
awareness, advocate for the individuals, & promote education and research. Although you do not have to be diagnosed as
Celiac to become a member or support this cause, if you or a family member has this disease you are welcome to join. As well
as anyone with (or knows someone with) wheat or gluten allergy or intolerance. Medical professionals and teachers are also
encouraged to join and anyone who is interested in learning about Celiac. The national level in the association is divided
by the local chapters, which work together to "Increase awareness of the disease among health care professionals and
the public. Provide reliable and up-to-date information about the disease and the gluten-free diet (newsletters, availability
of gluten-free products, relevant literature). Consulting with the government and the Food & Drug industries about the
gluten-free food and other interests of the association." Plus many more daily and large events and problems we would
face alone without the support of the association. This association is incorporated under the Canada Corporations Act and
is a registered member of the Canada Revenue Agency, as a charity. It has a national office in Mississauga Ontario and is
volunteer-based. It was founded in 1972 by two women from Kitchener Ontario. Beginning as a way to help us help ourselves
and each other, this amazing group now has over 28 chapters and 30 satellite groups across Canada.
TD Canada Trust's "Friends of the Environment Foundation" has funded over
17,500 projects across Canada and the best part is every cent donated goes right back into our communities! Donations can
be one time or monthly right from your account, meaning you can help every month without a second thought about payment. You
can also join an advisory board or volunteer for the Great Canadian Shores Clean Up, which is an amazing success. In 2008
alone 63,000 Canadians removed 130,000 kilograms of garbage for our beaches. Of course people wonder what TD is doing besides
relocating funds, but with all their steps towards a healthier planet they were named as one of the worlds most sustainable
companies. They are working with cleaner, renewable energy, recycling more than just paper, and are committed to becoming
a carbon neutral company. A great example for other companies across Canada and the world. In their foundation, they also
give grants to not-for-profit Canadian organizations who can apply online. Basically FEF is helping keep Canada the amazing
place it is and should always remain.
WWF Canada is an amazing charity which can even help the next generation start
a path of change for the world and all within it! Throwing an ECHOage birthday party is one way we can start helping now,
find out more about these special events at www.echoage.com. Learn from the start that it is great to get and give! People
of all ages can also join the "Living Planet Community" and see what they already do and what else they can do to
help the environment and the animals. You can even get tips on writing the Prime Minister and your local MP to support changes
on their end. Also famous for the annual shoreline clean up, this is yet another way to involve the family, classroom, or
yourself about the need to be eco-friendly to our country and world. You can even adopt an at risk species or give the gift
of adoption at http://wwfstore.donorportal.ca/c-11-wildlife-adoptions.aspx an amazing and thoughtful present you can feel
good about!
The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation is a volunteer based national organization,
which has a main goal - to have a future free of breast cancer! While they accept donations they are always promoting awareness
and fundraising in creative ways. You can also shop online for clothing, books, gifts, and much more. This foundation began
in 1986 on the basis of standing together and using the funds for this research. There are branches across Canada, including
an Ontario chapter. With city members, officials and even local t.v. starts all working on the board for the betterment of
all. Including Honorary Chair, Co-host Beverly Thomson, from Canada AM. Working on not just research, awareness, diagnosis
and treatment they also help by giving grants to those looking to find the cure, risks, rates and reasons. Canada Awareness:
Not only is half the population women but in this year about 435 women a week are diagnosed with breast cancer and a smaller
amount of men are diagnosed as well. This year alone around 5,400 women will actually die and close to 50 men, all from breast
cancer. Around 1 in 9 women will develop breast cancer in her life 1 in 28 of those will find it fatal. Increasing awareness
and testing can lower the fatality rates.
The KW Humane Society is always in need of support! Kitten and puppy food is always
needed and volunteers are always appreciated! They also provide an amazing fact filled newsletter which can be opened quickly
from their site, including their latest edition. Not only do they save local animals and street animals, they take several
dogs a year now from puppy mills, and are a great supporter of tougher laws on those "factories" where dogs are
abused and bred without care. You can also give gifts in honour of loved ones which make super special gifts for mother's
day, father's day, birthdays, Christmas and really any special occasion - and starting at only $10.00! Although people can
have pets their whole lives, there is always more we can learn about them and how to take better care of them. For example,
during a thunderstorm or fireworks many puppies get scared but it turns out just saying "Don't worry, it'll be ok"
and petting them can actually reinforce the scared behavior for the next storm.
The United Way has 118 divisional groups in Canada and volunteer board members
for each local group. They are second only to the government in providing funding for voluntary and social services across
Canada. They give funds back to communities and people in need, as well as providing changes in living conditions for all
Canadians. Without political interest at the heart or specific causes focused on, every organization gains respect for their
efforts to benefit our country. With around 900 people on staff, the tens of thousands across Canada you see are more
likely the volunteers donating their time towards similar interest goals. Realizing that Canadian communities are diverse,
the organization attempts to bring the potential from every unique individual in those communities. The United Way has historical
roots back to 1939, when the agency worked with people facing the depression. The best part is they do not put bandages on
the problems they see, they look into why there even is a problem and work to change policies so they do not reoccur. Unfortunately
with several of the Canadian businesses going under in 2008, the corporate support dropped and over 1 million dollars in support
was unavailable that year. Hopefully we can all see the importance of the United Way and give in time, money, or support as
they have done for generations of Canadians.
The Children's Wish Foundation celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2009, and that year
also celebrated its 15,000th wish! Every year there are thousands of children diagnosed with life threatening illnesses. This
foundation is able to grant a special wish to two children every day. Started in 1984 this organization now has branches in
every organization and is supported by volunteers and donors, who make the magic possible. Helping children have hope and
helping the whole family can change a child and give them something to be positive about and look forward to. Never saying
no is a gift in itself but to do anything from gifting a new computer set to meeting a Hollywood star, no wish is too big
or too small! Everyone knows the power of healing that can come from positive attitudes and this organization can assist in
that being a real possibility!
STEPS, Society for Permanent Recovery, holds a 90 day recovery program for willing
participants who want to change their lives and start over. Working and attending 12 step meetings has been shown to improve
the potential for permanent sobriety. Located in Richmond Hill Ontario, there are ways to help by donating clothing and items
which can be given to help the members or sold to outlets who support back into the charity. Talize in Kitchener being one
of the best "new and nearly new" clothing and item stores in the area who support STEPS. Offering coffee and a place
to talk with workers, volunteers and other persons addicted to damaging influences in their lives, through drugs or alcohol,
there are beautiful meeting rooms and groups offered throughout the week. The used furniture store open in Richmond Hill,
allows the members to learn skills and gain confidence in the workplace. With an amazingly broad volunteer and donation support
system, there are experiences for the member and the rest of the community to enjoy and learn from.
An amazing Canadian charity is The War Amps. Recognized by it's keytag program
which was launched in 1946, providing stable employment for disadvantaged people across Canada, and in 1972 they began the
division of Address Labels Service. One of its more recent divisions, started in 1975 is called CHAMPS, standing for CHildren
AMPutees. This program helps children develop a positive outlook and understanding of the challenges they face but also realizing
the families may need financial support and assistance with artificial limbs. They also connect families to each other for
emotional support and help with recreational development. Although the age to join CHAMPS is limited to under 18, after a
child turns 18 they may continue on through the CHAMPs development program. Under this program, in 1991, came JUMPSTART focused
on children missing more than one limb, and helping deal with those challenges. Plus providing early age computer training
to jumpstart the childrens technological abilities. This helps provide a great career for themselves in the the future. Also
realizing that most child amputees had lost limbs in avoidable playground accidents the War Amps started PLAYSAFE in 1978
and in 1985 they began a project called NEVER AGAIN, which pays tribute to those who have served but also experienced the
true horrors of real war. As part of this mission, there is available a Military Heritage Series with currently 23 videos
available to loan or own. Another major division in the War Amps is the DRICESAFE program, which in 2007 celebrated its 20th
anniversary. You may own or have noticed these logos in several car windows across Canada.
The Canadian Wildlife Foundation has a goal of not only education but advocating environmentally
responsible choices among all Canadian adults. They also speak up for nature when it comes to any conservation acts and wildlife
protection. Like most foundations they are built on donor support, donations of both time and money, to make this organization
run and achieve the many accomplishments they have successfully completed. They enable people to protect their own communities,
children to have the resources to learn, and push the government to make informed decisions. They have not only made laws
happen, they help tell us which Candian species are endangered and how fresh our fresh water really is. 100% Canadian, this
organization is not supported by the government and therefore has no governments agenda. With everything to make learning
fun from teacher plans, magazines, posters and even fact sheets, they work hard to keep Canada the beautiful place it is and
should forever be with a little help from Canadians!
The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada, is a well known foundation, which
like most health care centers lists whole wheat as a food of choice (again proving why we all need to spread the word if a
large company dedicated to health doesn't know the effects gluten can have on the heart and body). Hopefully, due to their
values of innovation, and their passion and courage to discover other areas of focus and finding new behaviours and approaches,
they will soon be caught up in the gluten free healthy heart campaign! Otherwise, their website is loaded with useful information
and leads to discovering even more. You can join their newsletter group, develop and action plan, and see what the younger
generation can do and learn in this field. You can also sign up for their occasional free CPR training programs. They work
on eliminating smoking and helping people manage their weight (again why they need more Celiac information since so many actually
gain weight before diagnosis). There are lots of ways to volunteer just contact them!
Although Mark Yantzi, the man who started it all, recently retired - Community Justice
Initiatives is successfully going into its next year booming! This non-profit organization is known as the world's first restorative
justice program, which involves the bringing together the offender, the person harmed by the crime committed, and the community
to address the crime. An excellent choice of volunteer/agency coordination, you can tour the facility, meet the staff, take
training programs in several fields, and become a member (gaining invites to special events, getting a newsletter, offers
for volunteer opportunities, and more)! They also have an onsite library and a collection of amazing books to purchase. Divided
into groups we find Resolve, Revive, and Stride. Resolve is the original program which deals with victim/offender reconciliation.
Revive started as a group where sexually abused women were able to come together and talk about their experiences. It has
now evolved into groups which help the women recover and the men who abused to avoid re-offending. Stride helps women who
have been in the federal prison system with support to transition successfully back into the world.
The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation is recognized as a leader in Cancer research
and the leading Canadian cancer research center. Raising around $60 million dollars a year, their goal is to find a cure for
cancer "In our lifetime." Focusing on all areas of cancer from brain and head to skin and cell, every dollar is
used to the best ability. With 67.4% going straight into research, 9.5% going to patient care and education and only 3.7%
going to the building and equipments, and even putting 9.7% into endowments for the future. With the amazing support of the
communities this foundation is the leader in robotic surgery, and is able to promote new ideas developed by leading doctors,
and remains in the top 5 of cancer research facilities in the world!
There is in the Waterloo Region a division of the Food Bank, and they give out
about 3 million pounds of emergency food a year! However, with this amount comes the understanding that it is not enough for
our community and with poverty increasing, businesses being closed, elderly people on unrealistic pensions, and most jobs
only hiring part time with little or no benefits - the amount of hungry people and families will only increase. Since the
recession in 1982 and the official founding in 1984, the Food Bank has helped millions of Canadians regardless of age, gender,
background etc. Besides donating your food and time, you could ask the business you shop or eat at if they donate. Especially
food sector business, any food left over at the end of the day could go to families who have not eaten today. The most important
thing to note is that around 25,000 people in our communities need your help if you are able. If donating food the cost is
low for the top 5 most needed foods: canned stews, pastas, beans, plus dried pastas and rice. It is also important to note
that almost half of the hamper recipients are children and over 25% of people receiving these were 2 parent families. We cannot
judge people based on the stereotypes as they are quite simply false.
